I have been seeing Dr. Schehr for many years and feel so blessed to have found her. I have no doubt that I would not be as flexible and not have an overall sense of wellness than if I had never met her. I’m in my seventies and have good posture thanks to Dr. Schehr. She helped me through post operative scarring that, unknown to me, was pulling me forward so that I was not able to stand fully erect. She is trained and certified in visceral manipulation where she can tell if your colon or other organs are twisted causing them not to be doing their job as well as they should be. It’s uncanny how she can “read” a body. She often tells me where I’m hurting before I can tell her and has been correct every time . It’s the most amazing experience . I also look better when I leave her office as I have asked her to help me with the signs of aging on my face and am very pleased with the results. In this day of the corona virus, Dr. Schehr maintains a safe environment . I highly recommend her.

WHY DOES MY BODY FEEL LESS ACTIVE, LOOK LESS VIBRANT OVER THE YEARS?

  • “USE”
    • It’s the wear and tear to which we subject ourselves…
    • and the older we get, the longer we’ve been doing it.
    • We tend to live our lives, doing the same things day after day, year after year.
    • Therefore, the body has a tendency to move in the same ways which overwork some areas, while underworking others.
    • This results in uneven muscle tension and asymmetries of the body and face.
  • “MISUSE”
    • We’re talking about lying on the couch, (always in the same favorite spot), reading or watching TV,
    • Carrying a baby in the same arm,
    • Letting the dog take you for a walk, or
    • Sitting in the same poor posture at work, every day
  • “ABUSE”
    • When you knowingly overuse your body
    • Examples include gardening all day…then doing it again the next day,
    • over-exercising,
    • wearing the wrong shoes – because they look good.
    • You can substitute your own bad ideas.

HOW CAN I REMAIN ACTIVE AND LOOK MORE VIBRANT OVER THE YEARS?

  • Treat your body well
    • Eat nutritiously
    • Exercise
    • Drink water
    • Pay attention to subtle changes in your body
  • Maintain the systems of your body including
    • Musculoskeletal
    • Circulatory
    • Digestive
    • Respiratory
    • Nervous
    • Endocrine

WHAT HAPPENS OVER TIME IF I DON’T MAINTAIN MY BODY WELL?

  • You may feel older
    • Have less energy
    • Stiffness throughout the body
    • Less flexibility
    • Aches and pains
  • You may look older
    • Forward head and rounded shoulders
    • Hump at the base of the neck or upper back
    • Standing bent forwards or sideways…or both
    • Sagging upper arms
    • Sunken eyes
    • Sagging jowls and neck
    • Disappearing lips
    • Facial lines, furrows and wrinkles
  • You may sound older
    • A tense, weakened voice
    • Heavy breathing

HOW CAN BALTIMORE HOLISTIC PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

Active parents. Happy children.

Have you noticed those around you who seem to be aging better?  Some may be due to genetics. But for those of us not so lucky, a physical therapist with a holistic, hands-on approach may help.

As time goes by, it does not have to be associated with pain and stiffness, poor posture, or facial wrinkles. Dr. Schehr understands that many of these changes are due to the imbalance of muscle tension over the years from your life. Besides being caused by the situations listed above, problems associated with the internal organs of your body may cause your body to protect it by pulling your body inward, forcing an altered (maybe poor) posture. These tensions and asymmetries may also be more pronounced by a past injury, disease or surgery, causing you to move differently, without even realizing it.

Baltimore Holistic Physical Therapy can help to reverse and slow the effects of years of “use, misuse and abuse” to your body by:

  • Changing the tension in the muscles, resulting in more balanced body and facial appearances
  • Relaxing the tension in your voice,
  • Reducing your aches and pains so you can move more freely
  • Restoring energy so you can participate in the things you enjoy most
  • Teaching you how to avoid the positions and activities that got you this way in the first place

A thorough assessment of your past history will be taken and a wellness program will be designed and individualized for your body and face.  This program uses Dr. Schehr’s integrated approach to various manual therapies, including visceral manipulation.

It’s easy. It’s fun. It works.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

A:  Firstly, I don’t believe in doing what didn’t work before. Many physical therapy practices approach a problem by going to the painful region. Oftentimes, this is a very temporary fix. By taking a holistic, hands-on approach, I understand that your pain may be coming from another part of the body, or even have multiple sources, including posture. By individualizing your treatment, I concentrate on healing and re-balancing the body, to manage your pain and lessen the chance of it returning. Then, I teach you how to manage your posture and movement.

A: Treatments for headaches or other pain from a recent problem will generally benefit from 2 treatment sessions for the first 2 weeks, then 1 session per week. Older conditions will benefit from 2 treatment sessions for the first week and then 1 session per week. Wellness sessions to rebalance and optimize the body for healthy aging range from a single session every month to once every six months and will be recommended on an individual basis.

A: An initial evaluation will take 1 hour. (Scar adhesion or sinus treatments only require 45 minutes.) Most follow-up treatments will be done in 30 minute sessions; multiple body areas may require 45 minutes

A: Any heavy exercise or recreational program should be done prior to the physical therapy or wellness session and then not for 24 hours after, in order for the body to adjust itself to the changes in muscle balance.

A: I will teach you techniques to perform on yourself if there is a flare-up and instruct you on proper body mechanics and ergonomics.

A: It is a facial aesthetics program of wrinkle reduction and facial rejuvenation using hands-on physical therapy and osteopathic techniques which may reduce the signs of aging in the face and neck. A FREE HEALTHY AGING CONSULTATION is available. See Refacée®

A: Wellness programs for healthy aging are not covered by most insurances, but may be reimbursable through a Healthcare Savings Account (HSA). A written bill and receipt will be provided upon your request. Although I do not participate in or bill insurance directly, I will provide a bill for you to submit to your insurance for reimbursement, upon request. As there are many types of insurance plans with each provider, it is your responsibility to understand the terms of your insurance. *Those with Medicare Part B insurance from CMS will only be allowed to be part of the Healthy Aging program, NOT for physical therapy treatment. Please see Payment Terms and Policies.
